current-news |
On 16 June 2026, we hosted the SAP & TUM Research Talk at SAP Labs Munich, bringing together industry professionals, customers, academics, and students to discuss “Perspectives on the Future of Carbon Accounting”
As carbon emissions now carry direct financial consequences, organizations are integrating carbon and financial accounting, meeting evolving rules like CBAM, and building decision‑useful sustainability processes.
The program opened with a welcome by Marc Astor (SAP). Professor Dr. Jürgen Ernstberger (TUM) and Bastian Distler (SAP) presented joint research on integrating carbon and financial accounting, including transactional carbon accounting and the automation of CBAM‑related workflows. Dr. Christoph Ernst (University of Mannheim) shared updates from the Carbon Accounting Standards Initiative (CASI), highlighting current developments and emerging directions for corporate and product‑level climate accounting.
Deloitte’s Julia van Oss, Tristan Werner, and Philipp Nies then outlined an end‑to‑end pathway to embed ESG directly into ERP processes with SAP Green Ledger, from purchase orders to e‑invoices to produce timely, decision‑useful insights. Followed by Kornelia Maier (SAP), who discussed how AI is transforming Finance and Risk, enabling real‑time decision support, advanced automation, embedded compliance, and more scalable, robust carbon accounting.
The event concluded with an interactive panel and Q&A featuring all speakers, addressing practical questions on data quality, regulation, and implementation.
